Red Wings Throttle Wild
(Detroit, MI) — Jimmy Howard recorded his sixth shutout of the season as Detroit trounced the Wild, 6-0. Howard made 19 saves to deliver his 11th career doughnut. Josh Harding was tagged for all six goals on 29 shots before departing. Matt Hackett made six saves in relief for Minnesota, which lost its third straight contest. The Wild are back home tomorrow night to face the Colorado Avalanche.
Backstrom To Miss Time
(Detroit, MI) — Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom will miss two-to-four weeks of action with a groin strain. Backstrom is 17-17-and-6 in 42 games this season. Minnesota recalled goaltender Matt Hackett from the American Hockey League’s Houston Aeros earlier Friday.
Timberwolves Take On Portland
(Portland, OR) — The Timberwolves are back in action tonight at the Portland Trail Blazers. Minnesota has suffered back-to-back losses on its four-game road trip after starting the quest with a win. The T’Wolves return home after tonight’s contest for a matchup with the Clippers on Monday.
Twins Open Grapefruit League Play
(Fort Myers, FL) — The Twins get their first action of 2012 today when they start Grapefruit League action against the Tampa Bay Rays. Minnesota will send right-hander Carl Pavano to the hill to start the spring schedule. Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau and Denard Span are all expected to play.
Saints’ Vilma Put Bounty On Favre
(Undated) — According to ESPN, Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma put a bounty on Brett Favre’s [[ FARV ]] head during the 2009 NFC Championship game. Vilma allegedly tossed $10-thousand on a table and said it would go to anyone who knocks the quarterback out of the game. No one cashed in on Vilma’s bet, but New Orleans finished the game with six QB hits. Favre threw for 310 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions to go along with a fumble in the 31-28 overtime loss in January 2010.
Gophers Close Regular Season
(Minneapolis, MN) — Minnesota’s men’s basketball team closes out the regular season today when it hosts Nebraska. The Gophers have stumbled, losing six straight to fall to 5-and-12 in the Big Ten. UM is 17-and-13 overall this season.
