A total of 4 candidates have filed for the District 20 state Senate seat formerly held by the late Senator Gary Kubly. Kubly died on March 2nd from Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and a special election to fill his seat for the remaining 9 months of his term will be held on April 10th. Two Democrats, a Republican and an Independent filed for the seat prior to the deadline on Tuesday. The DFL’ers that filed include current State Representative Lyle Koenen of Clara City and John Schultz of Correll. They will face off against each other in a primary election March 27th. Also filing were Olivia Farmer Leon Greenslit as a member of the Independence Party, and Republican Gregg Kulberg of rural Hector. Greenslit lost to Kubly in a 3-way House race in 1996, and Kubly beat Kulberg for the Senate seat in November of 2010. District 20 covers Renville, Chippewa, Big Stone, Lac Qui Parle, Yellow Medicine and Lincoln Counties.
