The former Sibley East transportation director currently serving a 12-year prison sentence for having a sexual relationship with a student is contesting his sentence. 50-year-old Kevin David Jones was sentenced in June of 2009 after pleading guilty to 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct after the relationship with the 15-year-old girl was discovered. He is now contesting that sentence, however, after learning that he had been offered a plea deal he was supposedly never told about. The settlement would have called for Jones to plead guilty to 3rd-degree criminal sexual conduct, which would have led to a 4-year prison sentence. Sibley County Judge Thomas McCarthy heard testimony from Jones and his attorney recently, and is taking the issue “under advisement.” The options available include reducing Jones’ prison sentence or withdrawing his plea and calling a new trial.
