Criminal and legal proceedings are on hold in the case of a Montevideo man accused of fatally stabbing a woman outside a restaurant. The lawyer for 24-year-old Darek Nelson has asked a judge for an examination to see if his client is competent to stand trial. Nelson is accused of killing 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano, a co-worker at the Montevideo Pizza Ranch, on January 13th. Investigators say Nelson had strong romantic feelings for Lozano, but he felt rejected by her. Lozano was stabbed 30 times. Nelson has been charged with 2nd-degree murder, 1st-degree manslaughter and 2nd-degree assault, and remains in custody.
