The investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Bird Island late last week continues. The fire at the home of Jason and Sandy Zuhlsdorf on South 4th Street in Bird Island apparently started in or near the home’s garage at around 9:30 Friday morning, and the Bird Island Fire Department immediately requested mutual aid from Olivia firefighters and the State Fire Marshall’s office. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than 5 hours, but the home was declared a total loss. Monetary donations, as well as clothing or gift cards for the Zuhlsdorf family are being accepted at the State Bank of Bird Island, the Learning Funhouse, and Rural American Fitness.
An apartment fire in the City of Stewart early Sunday morning displaced a family of four. The fire in the home over the former Stewart Hardware store was reported at around 1:50am Sunday. The Juan and Bree Rodriguez Family had arrived home to smoke coming from the roof of the building, and called 911. When firefighters arrived they used a thermal imaging camera to discover a hot spot by the dining room light fixture, and requested mutual aid from the Hutchinson Fire Department for the use of it’s aerial truck. Several ventilation holes were cut in the building’s roof, and the fire was contained and extinguished. It’s being attributed to an electrical problem with the light fixture. No one was injured, and the family is being assisted by the Red Cross.
