The Fairmont City Council hired a new city administrator this week in a split decision. Current Fairmont Administrator Jim Zarling announced last month that he will be retiring at the end of May, and recommended that Mike Humpal be appointed as his replacement. Councilors Andy Lucas and Darin Rahm voted against the measure, however, preferring to interview outside candidates to determine if Humpal is the right person for the job. Two councilors voted in favor of the measure, leaving Fairmont Mayor Randy Quiring to cast the deciding vote. He voted in favor of making Humpal the city’s next administrator.
