A civil suit is being filed against the City of New Ulm and a New Ulm police officer involved in a fatal crash this past summer. The suit is being filed by the family of Myra Meyers and her son Brian Wichmann, who were killed in the July 8th crash. New Ulm Patrol Officer Mathew Rasmussen was reportedly travelling 72 miles-per-hour on North Garden Street in New Ulm in a police squad prior to the collision with the vehicle driven by Meyers. Rasmussen had apparently been following a vehicle suspected of speeding at the time, and had allegedly turned off his emergency lights just before the crash. A grand jury recently ruled that no criminal charges will be filed against Rasmussen for the incident. He may still face disciplinary actions through the New Ulm Police Department. The civil suit against him will likely focus on whether or not the emergency lights were on at the time of the crash. The family’s attorney is currently reviewing the Minnesota State Patrol report on the accident.
