An Albert Lea couple has been sentenced to a year in prison for participating in a counterfeit ring that investigators say was relatively sophisticated. 31-year-old Travis Cameron and 34-year-old Heather Cameron had pleaded guilty to counterfeiting US currency. Heather Cameron reportedly admitted to chemically washing or bleaching $5 bills and reprinting them as $100 bills. Federal investigators say the bleaching process can be more time consuming and requires some expertise, and that the defendants were prolific in passing the currency over a widespread area in Minnesota. Six other co-defendants involved in the ring have already been sentenced to terms ranging from probation to around three years in federal prison.
