An estimated 20 acres northeast of Hutchinson was blackened by a fire earlier this week. The dry, windy conditions on Monday turned a small debris fire into an inferno that raced along the edges of a slough near Piker Lake. A homeowner on Oday Avenue told authorities he had been burning grass over the weekend and then threw more debris on the fire Monday. The flames then quickly spread into some nearby cattails. Firefighters were on the scene for over 2 hours, and used a new tool to battle the blaze: back-mounted leaf blowers. The machines were used to blow the flames back onto already blackened areas. No structures were damaged by the fire, and no injuries were reported.
