The Sleepy Eye City Council this week ordered in the preparation of the final plans and specifications for more than $5-million worth of street and utility improvements in the city this year. The $5.82 million worth of work will include assessments for a total of 267 property owners, mostly on the south end of Sleepy Eye along Water Street. Bids are set to be opened on Tuesday, March 20th, with contracts then being awarded on March 22nd. Property owners will be assessed the costs for improvements to curb and gutter, sidewalks, driveway approaches and sanitary service. Sleepy Eye Public Utilities will pay for all water improvements. Councilors also approved 2 alternate project plans that include work in the southwest corner of the city in order to avoid having to rebid the entire project if the bids come in too high. City officials say that if the bids come in under estimates the project will be paid for using bonds, and will not cause an increase in city taxes.
