Minnesota’s only hospital for mentally ill and dangerous patients is in turmoil. Most of the experienced psychiatric staff have reportedly either quit or been fired at the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter. A total of 6 of the psychiatrists who treat more than 375 patients have resigned in protest of what they consider the combative style of the new administrator. An investigation into whether administrator David Proffitt has created a hostile workplace is underway. Department investigators described the hospital in 2010 as chaotic, dangerous and dysfunctional. Proffitt says he’s not aware of any actions that might be considered hostile, and has declined to comment on why the psychiatrists left. He says the vast majority of his staff is enthusiastic about making the necessary changes.
