A Minnesota Department of Transportation independent consulting team met with local leaders and law enforcement officials on Wednesday concerning the stretch of Highway 14 from New Ulm to Mankato. New Ulm Mayor Bob Beussman was on hand for Wednesday’s meeting. He says a five-person road-safety audit team was performing a field review of the deadly stretch of highway Thursday to assess short-term safety strategies. A total of 15 people were killed on the less-than 30-mile stretch in the decade leading up to 2010. Plans for the 4-lane expansion of Highway 14 have been approved, but are awaiting full federal funding for the project. The audit team is expected to share its findings sometime in February.
