A former high school girls basketball coach accused of having a sexual relationship with one of his students pleaded guilty to criminal sexual conduct Friday. 29-year-old Steve Andrew Campbell of Lake Crystal pleaded guilty to 5 felony counts of 3rd-degree criminal sexual conduct. His relationship with the 17-year-old girl included having coached her with the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial School District as well as providing her religious counseling and hiring her as an employee on his farm. The 2 reportedly had sex multiple times. The question a jury would have been confronted with is if Campbell was in a position of authority over the student at the time. Friday morning’s plea hearing came just days before Campbell’s trial was set to begin. Without the plea, he would have faced more than 10 years in prison. Now he may receive little or no prison time. Sentencing is set for March 21st.
