A former high school basketball coach in Lake Crystal accused of having a sexual relationship with a student is scheduled to appear in court today (TUE) for a pre-trial hearing. 29-year-old Steve Andrew Campbell is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old girl who had been on the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial basketball team he was coaching. Campbell admitted to having sex with the girl in October of 2010, but claims it was not a crime because he wasn’t coaching her at the time. In Minnesota it is only a crime for an adult to have sex with a 17-year-old if the adult is in a position of authority over the teen. Campbell resigned from the school district shortly after the charges were filed against him. His trial has been on hold since July due to the high number of court cases in Blue Earth County, but is scheduled to start next Wednesday, January 25th.
