Police in St. Peter arrested a Minneapolis man on Tuesday that they say is a suspect in recent bank robberies around the state, including in St. Peter. A bank in Brewster was robbed at just before Noon on Tuesday by a white male driving a silver SUV, the same description of the man who robbed the Wells Federal Bank in St. Peter on December 22nd and several other banks in Minnesota in recent weeks. Authorities suspected that the bank robber lived in the Metro area, so after the robbery in Brewster they began to monitor traffic on the most direct route from Brewster to the Twin Cities, Highway 169. At just after 1pm a silver SUV was spotted heading northbound on 169 just south of St. Peter and a traffic stop was conducted. Police found a fake pistol and a large amount of currency in the vehicle, and 49-year-old Mark Edward Wetsch was taken into custody without incident. Charges are pending against him in Nobles County for the Brewster bank robbery, and an investigation is underway to see if he is responsible for the other robberies. Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation.
