An 18-year-old New Ulm man faces felony charges for allegedly stealing a bicycle from outside of the New Ulm Medical Center. Tyler James Duane Steinmetz was charged with felony theft and possession of stolen property in Brown County Court on Tuesday. The $1,500 Fischer “Xtra Cycle” bicycle was stolen from a bike rack at the hospital on November 30th, and a surveillance camera captured video of the crime. Two men were spotted near the bike rack, and one of them was identified as Steinmetz. He initially denied stealing the bike, but confessed after learning there was a surveillance camera. The bike was found at the other suspect’s home. Steinmetz is currently serving 2 years on probation as well after pleading guilty to theft last month for stealing a truck from the New Ulm Civic Center parking lot in late July. He was also recently convicted of receiving stolen property and disorderly conduct.
