A 77-year-old rural Pemberton man was killed while battling a field fire Monday afternoon. Former Blue Earth County Commissioner Alvis More was apparently burning garbage in a portion of a field that had already been tilled when the fire spread to a grassy area. Investigators believe that More was attempting to stop the fire by using a tractor to dig a ditch and cut it off when he was either overcome by smoke or suffered a medical problem and died at the scene. The fire was reported to authorities at around 1:20pm Monday, and firefighters from Mapleton and Pemberton responded. More’s body was found in the tractor. It’s gas tanks had ignited prior to rescue crews arriving on the scene. The fire also burned several acres before it was put out. More served as a Blue Earth County Commission from 1989 to 2002. A moment of silence was held in his honor during today’s (TUE) Blue Earth County Board meeting.
