A new trial date has been set for a former high school basketball coach in Lake Crystal who has been charged in the sexual assault of a player. The criminal sexual conduct trial of 29-year-old Steve Andrew Campbell has been on hold since July in order to accommodate other trials in Blue Earth County Court. Campbell’s trial is now scheduled to start on January 25th, and is expected to take about four days. Campbell is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old girl who had been on the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial basketball team he was coaching. In Minnesota it is only a crime for an adult to have sex with a 17-year-old if the adult is in a position of authority over the teen. Campbell has acknowledged having sex with the girl in October of 2010, but has said it was not a crime because he wasn’t coaching her at the time. Prosecutors disagree, and now a jury will decide. Campbell resigned from the school district shortly after the charges were filed against him. A pre-trial hearing will be held on January 17th.
