A fatal car crash in New Ulm this past July involving a New Ulm police officer will be referred to a grand jury to determine if charges will be brought against the officer. The accident took place on July 8th on North Garden Street at the entrance to the Garden Terrace Apartments. 82-year-old Myra Meyer of New Ulm was turning into the driveway with her son, 60-year-old Brian Wichmann of Mankato, when their vehicle was struck by a police squad car driven by Officer Mathew Rasmussen. Wichmann died that day at the New Ulm Medical Center. Meyer died at the Hennepin County Medical Center 11 days later. Rasmussen suffered non-life threatening injuries. The state patrol spent several weeks compiling a report on the crash, which has been under review by the Redwood County Attorney’s Office since September. The report has not been made public yet, and a date has not yet been set to call a grand jury. Rasmussen returned to active duty in September
