A fatal accident occurred on Brown County Road 27 west of New Ulm Wednesday evening. 58-year-old Alan Brandel of New Ulm was driving a cab-less John Deere tractor eastbound on 27 when the tractor was rear-ended by a 2007 Ford pickup driven by 50-year-old Glen Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye at about 5:45pm. The impact ejected Brandel from the tractor and onto the roadway, where he was struck by a Nissan pickup truck driven by 46-year-old Steven Asmus of New Ulm. Brandel was pronounced dead at the scene. Mathiowetz was taken to the Sleepy Eye Hospital to be checked out, and Asmus was not injured. The Sleepy Eye Police Department and Sleepy Eye and Allina Ambulance assisted the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and the State Patrol at the scene.
