Wild 2, Oilers 1 (SO) 14 Oct 11

Matt Cullen and Devin Setoguchi scored in the shootout to lift the Minnesota Wild to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.

Niklas Backstrom stopped three of the four shots in the shootout as the Wild extended their winning streak over Edmonton to seven games.

Cullen had Minnesota’s only goal in regulation to help Minnesota rebound from a shootout loss at Ottawa on Tuesday night.

Ryan Smyth had staked Edmonton to a 1-0 lead at 11:40 of the opening period by deflecting a bouncing puck past Backstrom. It was his first goal in an Edmonton uniform since Feb. 23, 2007.

Backstrom, who improved to 13-25 in shootouts, turned aside 21 shots for the Wild, who have won 21 of the last 27 meetings at home against the Oilers.

Nikolai Khabibulin had a sensational effort for Edmonton in his first start of the season, making 35 saves – including 15 in the final period when the Wild held a 15-1 edge in shots.

It continued a long drought for Khabibulin, whose last victory was on Feb. 17 before he ended last season with nine consecutive defeats.
