A former District 88 special education teacher charged with 3 counts of malicious punishment of a child was sentenced to 1 year of unsupervised probation this week in Brown County Court. 51-year-old Kay Audrey Carlson of Lake Crystal was accused of leaving marks on 3 second-grade girls at Jefferson Elementary in New Ulm after they refused to move to the rear of a line because they had been talking. Carlson allegedly used force to get them to move, but later claimed the students were making up the incident. In addition to the year of probation Carlson was also ordered to complete an anger management program and write a letter of apology. The District 88 School Board had approved a settlement agreement with Carlson in August that included her irrevocable resignation, and agreed to pay the employer’s portion of her health insurance premiums through August of 2012.
