A state senator from Waseca has announced that he will be running against Southern Minnesota Congressman Tim Walz next year. Republican Mike Parry is in his first full term as a state senator. He came to the Legislature in an early 2010 special election and won a full term that fall. When Republicans won control of the Senate last fall, he became chairman of the State Government Innovations and Veterans Committee. He announced his campaign to unseat 3-term Democratic Representative Tim Walz on Friday. Walz has been a GOP target since defeating incumbent Gil Gutknecht in 2006. He survived his toughest contest in 2010 when he won by only 5 percentage points in a four-way race. Walz is retired from the Army National Guard. Parry has a background in business.
