A Burnsville man who murdered his ex-wife in a Mankato parking lot last year began his life sentence on Friday, and surrendered custody of his 3 young children, who witnessed the killing. 35-year-old Joel Marvin Munt was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on September 26th after a Blue Earth County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and other felony charges involving the children and other witnesses. He gunned down Svetlana Munt at Mankato’s Rasmussen Woods in 2010 after ramming into her car and pinning it against a tree. He voluntarily terminated his parental rights in court on Friday in order to “give his kids the best chance for a future.” The court did not make public who will get custody of the children at this time. A review hearing for the custody case has been set for January 4th.
