The future of New Ulm’s Bavarian Blast was discussed Wednesday evening during the festival’s board of directors annual meeting. The severe heat of this past July caused serious financial problems for New Ulm’s summer festival. A dramatic drop in attendance led to a $38,000 deficit for Bavarian Blast. Event revenues were down by $52,000 over the previous year. A special Bavarian Blast fundraiser featuring Alex Meixner in September raised around $7,500, but with that money and other revenues and donations, the festival will still be about $6,000 in debt. The organization has reached it’s fundraising limit for the year as well in order to retain it’s tax-exempt status. An application for a “Minnesota Festival Support” grant has been submitted, but those funds would not come until well into next year, leaving the future of the Blast in question. No official decision on holding a 2012 Bavarian Blast was made during the annual meeting Wednesday.
