Burning bans are being imposed across northern Minnesota as fires burn in the Boundary Waters area, and now Waseca County has become one of the first counties in southern Minnesota to issue a burning ban as drought conditions here worsen. Waseca County Sheriff Brad Milbrath says they look at the weather and the current conditions when deciding on whether to issue a burn ban, and also go out and look at cornfields and the grass. He says that while some of the grass looks green, underneath it is dry and brown. The DNR rates the fire danger as high in southern Minnesota. The burning ban in Waseca County strictly prohibits large fires, with only small recreational fires kept within a fire ring being permitted until further notice.
