Today (FRI) marks the 1-year anniversary of heavy rains that caused severe flooding across the local area. The communities hit the hardest by the flooding included Truman, St. James, Madelia, St. Peter and New Ulm after more than a foot of rain fell in a brief amount of time in some locations. St. James Mayor Gary Sturm says the city has spent over $100,000 in the past year to protect the city’s wastewater system from future flooding. In the City of Truman, around 60 homes were damaged by flooding after 13 inches of rain fell in just a few hours. Madelia saw heavy flooding at the city park and golf course as well, and flooding closed roads in St. Peter and New Ulm for more than a week afterwards in some cases. Governor Pawlenty toured the area to assess the damage following the flooding, and FEMA did provide some reimbursements.
