The Nicollet County Board set the county’s preliminary property tax levy for 2012 this week. Nicollet County’s initial tax levy for next year was set at a little over $16.1 million, a 3.4% increase over this year. The county will be using more than $250,000 from it’s reserves and another fund to make up the shortfall in state funding following ongoing cuts to Local Government Aid. The board will meet to discuss the preliminary levy again at a public hearing on December 1st at 6:30pm, and final approval would take place during the regular board meeting on December 13th. Last year Nicollet County’s preliminary tax had been set at a 4% increase before the county board ultimately decided upon a 2.9% hike. Once a preliminary number is set the levy can be lowered, but not raised past that point.
