The Nicollet County Board this week urged local lawmakers to fast-track the expansion of Highway 14 to four lanes. The Board approved a letter to Governor Mark Dayton and state and federal area representatives asking that the local section of the deadly highway be expanded as soon as possible. The stretch of Highway 14 from New Ulm to North Mankato has a fatality rate twice that of any other 2-lane highway in the state. Nicollet County Administrator Robert Podhradsky says there have been a total of 39 fatal crashes along Highway 14 in the past 10 years, 11 of them in the 27-mile stretch between Mankato and New Ulm. The construction expanding 14 to four lanes around Waseca is expected to be completed this spring. The North Mankato to New Ulm stretch is not scheduled to be completed for several years still.
