The man accused of killing his ex-wife in Mankato last year took the stand in his own defense during his murder trial on Wednesday. Joel Marvin Munt faces the possibility of life in prison for the shooting death of Svetlana Munt in the parking lot of Mankato’s Rasmussen Woods in March of 2010. In court on Wednesday both Munt and his fiancé testified that Sveltana had been abusing the couple’s 3 young children prior to the shooting. The defense presented pictures of the children that showed bruises and bite and pinch marks, all allegedly inflicted by Svetlana. They are asking that the charges against Munt be reduced to manslaughter because he claims to have been protecting the children. Both the defense and the prosecution rested their cases Wednesday afternoon, and the jury is expected to hear closing arguments today (THU) before beginning deliberations.
