The Madelia Chamber of Commerce presented the community’s annual “Oscar Sorbel Hometown Hero” award to a fallen soldier this year. The award is presented every year as part of the re-enactment of the capture of the notorious Younger Brothers Gang. Oscar Sorbel was the young man who rode into Madelia to alert the community that the bank robbers were on their way. This year the nominations for the award were suspended in order to posthumously honor Army Specialist Emilio Camp Jr. The 20-year-old Madelia native was killed in Iraq on June 6th. His volunteer work in the community prior to enlisting included mission trips with his church, working for the local food shelf, and as a speaker at area schools. His family was presented the Hometown Hero award last weekend.
