The Sibley County Board this week agreed to allow the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office to provide a police chief for the City of Henderson temporarily. Current Henderson Police Chief Chester Aldrich is retiring October 1st, and the city is waiting on the results of a background check for Michael Cherney, who was offered the position earlier this month. Cherney currently lives in Adams, Minnesota, but was reportedly fired from a law enforcement job in Florida 20 years ago, so there was some hesitation in offering him the $44,000 a year position. Upon Aldrich’s retirement Sibley County Deputy Pat Nienaber will serve as the community’s chief of police until the background check results are in and a final decision on Cherney is made. All part-time Henderson police officers will continue to work as normal.
