The Blue Earth City Council meeting on October third could finally decide the future of the city’s law enforcement. The council instructed city administrator Kathy Bailey to produce a job description and pay scale for the hiring of a new police chief. There has been civic debate going on for months about whether the city should pursue a contract for coverage with the county sheriff, a contract with the nearby Winnebago police department or retain its own force. The retirement in June of Police Chief Dean Vereide couple with ongoing fiscal concerns common among Minnesota municipalities grappling with ongoing cuts in state aid have led to the issue. Sheriff Mike Gromley has been serving as interim police chief. Bailey has recommended maintaining the city’s police department and hiring a chief who also would perform patrol duties.
