The investigation into a head-on crash in Blue Earth County Sunday that killed 2 people continues, and the State Patrol says that a “significant distraction” may have been the cause. 23-year-old Mark Chalin was driving his Chevy Cobalt eastbound on County Road 90 south of Mankato when he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Jonna Martin of Lakefield. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene, along with Chalin’s passenger, 23-year-old Amber Menezes of Mankato. Authorities had received a driving complaint about Chalin’s car about 10 minutes before the crash. A witness told the State Patrol that the Cobalt was going approximately 70 miles-per-hour at the time, and that the passenger was in a position that would have limited visibility and caused significant distraction to the driver. Chalin is in Stable condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, and has undergone multiple surgeries since the crash, with another scheduled for today (WED).
