A Fairmont man accused of severely abusing his 7-month-old stepson was sentenced to more than 8 years in prison in Martin County Court on Monday. 36-year-old Robert Earl Pittman Junior pleaded guilty to 1 count of 1st-degree assault, and additional counts of 3rd-degree assault and malicious punishment of a child were dismissed in a plea deal. Pittman has been in custody since the November 2009 incident occurred. The baby suffered severe brain damage while under his care. Pittman had originally told authorities the infant must have fallen off the couch when he was in the other room, but later admitted to setting the child down with such force that he suffered critical injuries. During his sentencing Monday Pittman was given credit for the 646 days he has already spent in custody prior to being sentenced to 98 months in prison.
